Dorm Fridge – An Overview

Here’s an overview of the dorm fridge.

College is an amazing experience. Not only are you getting an education that will help shape the rest of your life, you are also meeting tons of new people that you would otherwise never interact with. There are so many great aspects to college life that it is obvious why so many people consider the time they spend there to be the best years of their life.

To the entering freshmen, it can be quite an experience. For many of them, freshman year is the first time that they are living away from their parents. While this can seem like no big deal to people who have never experienced it, it is actually a life changing time in a student’s life.

When you are not living with your parents anymore for the first time ever, you will immediately begin to notice the differences that come with living on your own. One of the main things that you will notice if you are about to go to school is the fact that you do not have the benefit of eating home cooked meals anymore.

In fact, you will soon notice that groceries do not magically appear as they once did, and will therefore have to head to the store to stock up on your own supplies. And once you get groceries, it is important that you have a good place to store them, like a dorm fridge – which is another term for mini fridge.

Dorm FridgeUnless you want to eat the food from the cafeteria every day, a dorm fridge is a necessity. Having one is so important that many colleges put them on the list of required items. If you do not have a dorm fridge, the only foods you will be able to keep around your dorm are dry goods. Other than that, your only other option is the school cafeteria. And while the cafeteria is good once in a while, you do not want to be eating there multiple times a day as your main source of food.

Not only would that be incredibly expensive, it would also negatively affect your health. Let’s face it, the food in the college cafeteria is nothing to write home about. Most of it is unhealthy junk, and not the type of food that you can base a proper diet around. That is why purchasing a dorm fridge is so essential to having a good college experience.

Just imagine – you and your buddies are hanging out in your dorm late at night and you get a case of the munchies. Without a dorm fridge that contains food and beverages, you would be forced to find other means of sustenance. In most cases, that would require you to leave the comfort of your dorm and go out into the night, hoping to find a place that is open. Most college cafeterias do not stay open late at night. So unless there is a pizza joint or some other late night eatery nearby, you will be out of luck. The only way to be sure that you always have good food at the ready whenever you need it is to purchase a dorm fridge.

While standard fridges are far too big to fit into the typical college room, dorm fridges are specially designed to take up as little space as possible while still providing you with a place to store food. Sure, you can not fit too much food inside of them, but it certainly beats the alternative. Cafeteria food is not only unhealthy, it can also taste terrible. And although there are most likely places nearby where you can get some fast food, the food that is served at those places hardly constitutes a healthy meal either.

With a dorm fridge, you will be able to keep enough food on hand to last you for days. Not only that, but you will also be able to keep your favorite drinks cold as well. Just imagine coming home and being able to open your dorm fridge to see it full of fresh fruits, vegetables, and other favorite items of your choosing. Cafeterias and fast food can not compete with that in either the taste or the health comparison.

Having a dorm fridge is so vital to a healthy college experience that you would be hard pressed to find a room that does not have one installed. And there really is no reason not to use one. Purchasing a dorm fridge will not cost you very much, as they are relatively cheap. You can most likely find a good dorm refrigerator for a couple hundred dollars or less. The amount of money you will save in a semester by not eating in the cafeteria every day will be enough by itself to cover the cost of the fridge. There really is no reason not to get one.

Almost every major refrigerator manufacturer makes a dorm fridge that you can pick up at a retail store or online. Most of them even have a freezer, so you can keep goodies like frozen pizza, popsicles, and other items to eat when you crave junk food or get a sweet tooth. If frozen food is not your cup of tea, you can use the freezer to make ice cubes.

Dorm fridges come in multiple colors and can have numerous features, depending on the model. The more expensive brands tend to have more features, but there is not much need to spend a ton of cash picking one up. In most cases, you will only use a dorm fridge for your first year. After that, you will probably be out of the dorms and renting a house or apartment. But that is not to say that you won’t be able to get use out of a dorm fridge after that – far from it.

In fact, a lot of students use their dorm fridges throughout all of college. Some people who never even went to college take advantage of dorm fridges. Due to their small size, they are perfect as a personal fridge to set in your room. Just because they are called dorm fridges does not mean you are required to use them in a dorm. They are perfect in any situation where you would like to use a fridge but have limited space.
